Latency Throughout the Streaming Pipeline
Industry Standards for Live Streaming Latency
How to Reduce Perceived Latency
Experiencing a lag or delayed performance during your live stream? There are several factors that can contribute to this, ranging from server startup delays to network latency and playback buffering. In this help article we mentioned the key areas to understand when analyzing the causes of latency or lag in live streaming on our platform and a few tips to resolve it.
Our platform follows an on-demand live stream architecture that automatically adjusts server settings, such as resolution, frame rate (FPS), and bitrate, based on your stream configuration for optimal performance.
What You Need to Know:
Latency is the time delay from capturing your video to when it’s viewed by your audience. This delay is introduced at various stages of the streaming pipeline.
Here’s a breakdown of latency sources:
Stage | Description | Estimated Latency |
Capture (Camera/Source) | Initial video/audio input capture. | 200–500 ms |
Encoding (via OBS, vMix, Wirecast, and others) | Compressing the video into a streamable format. | 2–3 seconds |
Ingest (Source to Streaming Server) | Uploading the stream to our servers. | Minimum 1–2 seconds (network-dependent) |
Processing/Transcoding (Server-Side) | Adaptive bitrate (ABR) encoding and other processing. | 2–6 seconds |
Distribution (CDN: Origin to Edge) | Routing the stream to CDN edge servers. | 200–500 ms |
Delivery (CDN Edge to Viewer) | Sending content from the edge to the end-user device. | Network-dependent |
Buffering & Playback (Viewer Device) | Buffering on the viewer's side for smooth playback. | ~10 seconds due to chunk-based playback |
Note: Our platform uses 3-second chunks, and players typically wait to receive 3-4 chunks before playback begins. This design ensures smooth playback but adds ~9-12 seconds of latency on average. |

Despite optimizations, some latency is expected in any live stream. For reference:
