Muvi’s Forensic Watermarking feature embeds invisible, session-specific identifiers into your videos, allowing leaked or pirated copies to be traced back to the original viewer. Unlike visible logos or text, it cannot be removed and remains even in screen-recorded files.

What Information Gets Embedded in the Watermark

When a viewer plays your video, Muvi embeds identifiers into the content. These may include:

• Your site URL
• Viewer details (email address, IP address, device/session ID, date, phone number if available)
• Each playback session is assigned a unique watermark, making it fully traceable.

How Watermarking Works

1. Every time a video is played, Muvi sends session-specific identifiers.
2. The supported CDN embeds these identifiers as an invisible forensic watermark into that viewer’s stream.
3. If required identifiers are missing, playback is blocked with an error message until the issue is resolved. However, the admin can also disable this setting so that viewers can watch the video even if a few identifiers are missing

From the viewer’s perspective:

• The video plays normally, with no visible impact on quality or experience.
• Behind the scenes, each playback is uniquely watermarked.
• Even if a viewer leaks or screen-records the video, the watermark remains embedded.

Piracy Reporting

If pirated content is found:

1. The studio/admin can report it directly from the Muvi Help Center by adding a support ticket.

2. Submit details such as:

• Pirated URL
• Content name
• Source URL
• Additional information (if applicable)

3. A ticket is generated for further investigation.

Detection Process

• The pirated copy is analysed.
• The hidden watermark is extracted.
• The identifiers (viewer details, session info) are retrieved.
• The responsible account/session is identified and relayed to the admin.

Why Use Forensic Watermarking

• Accountability: Trace leaked content back to its exact source.
• Invisible to viewers: Does not affect playback experience.
• Piracy deterrence: Highly effective for high-value content where revenue loss from leaks can be significant.
• Complementary to DRM: Together, they enhance both preventive and reactive anti-piracy measures.

Limitations

• Not preventive: Forensic Watermarking does not stop leaks; it is designed to trace the source after a leak occurs.
• No automatic alerts: The feature does not notify admins when content is leaked; detection requires reporting and analysis.
