Adding Subtitle to Video

Introduction

By adding subtitles to your videos you can enhance the video watching experience of your subscribers/viewers. They can watch a particular video with subtitles of their preferred language. A particular video can have one or more subtitles in different languages. Viewers can choose their preferred subtitles in the Muvi player during the play of the video. You can upload subtitles in .srt, . vtt, .stl, .smi and DFXP formats only. You can add subtitles to trailers as well. We also support Closed Captioning (CC) in subtitles.

Note:

• .smi format subtitle is only supported in Samsung TV Apps.
• The subtitle is not supported in iOS devices (Browsers) when played in full-screen mode.

How to Upload/Add A Subtitle

•  Go to “Manage Content” --> “Video Library” in your Muvi CMS
• In your Video Library, the right-hand side of the video clicks on “Add Subtitles” (Under Action). A window will popup.
• Under "Add Subtitles", select language from the drop-down menu
• Click on “Browse” to upload the.SRT, VTT, or DFXP file
• Click on “Submit” to add your subtitle

Repeat the process to add another subtitle in a different language.

Note: We do not support style characters in DFXP. We remove all the style characters and convert the subtitle file to VTT.

• Now map the video to your content and DON’T delete the video in video gallery. (Video will be played without subtitle, if it is deleted in video gallery).
• You can select the subtitle for a particular language in the player from the “Subtitle” button.

Translating Subtitle Name

You can translate the name of the subtitle languages you support for your store. For example, if you support Spanish subtitle and you want to show your users in Spain that you support this, then you can translate it into Spanish. (i.e. Español). When users in Spain try to select the subtitle while watching video in your store, they will see the subtitle name as "Español" instead of "Spanish".  

• Go to "Settings" -->"Language" -->"Translation" in the CMS
• Under "Player" click on "Subtitle" (See Below Screenshot)
• Select the language from the drop-down and translate the subtitle name to the selected language name.
• Click on "Save"

Adding Subtitle to Trailer

You can also add subtitle to trailers by following the above mentioned procedure. When users play the trailers, they will see the subtitles. However, you cannot add subtitles to any third party videos (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo) added as trailer. 

Changing Display Name of Subtitle

You can change the display name of a subtitle. 

• To change the display name of a subtitle, go to "Settings" -->"Language" -->"Translation" in the CMS
• Under "Player" click on "Subtitle".
• On the right-hand side of a specific subtitle, change its name.
• Click on "Save"
• When asked for confirmation, click on "Yes" to complete the process. 
• Go to "Manage Content" -->"Video Library" in the CMS. 
• Click on "Change Subtitle" under "Action". You will see the subtitle name has been changed. 

The display name of the subtitle will be changed. When users click on the subtitle button on the player, they can view the name that you have changed for that specific subtitle. 

Note: All the existing store owners will not be able to change the display name of already added subtitles. To change the name, they have to remove the subtitle and add it again. 

Deleting A Subtitle

To delete a subtitle that is already added to a video please perform the following steps.

• Go to “Manage Content" --> “Video Library” in your  CMS 
• On your Video Library, right hand side of the video click on “Change Subtitle” (Under Action). A window will popup.
• Click on “Delete” on the right hand side of the subtitle you want to delete
• When asked for confirmation, click on “Yes” 

The subtitle for the video will be deleted.

Note: If you delete the specific subtitle, it will not be displayed on the video when users try to play the video.

Subtitle Support for Offline Viewing

Note:

• For both streaming and offline viewing, Multiple Subtitle and Subtitle On/Off is available for Play and Cast in Android. However, for both streaming and offline viewing, Multiple Subtitle and Subtitle On/Off is not available for Cast and Play in Android (for both DRM and Non-DRM content).
• For both streaming and offline viewing, Multiple Subtitle and Subtitle On/Off is not available for Play and Cast in iOS (for Non-DRM content).

Enabling Subtitle Options

You can enable default subtitle options for the player. You can select the "Subtitle On as Default" and "Remember Subtitle Preference" option for the player.

• Subtitle On as Default

Select this option to make the subtitle always "on" for the player. So, when the end-users view the video, the subtitle will be always "on" for them on the player.

• Click on "Player".
• Scroll down to the bottom and select the checkbox "Subtitle On as Default" (see below screenshot).

• Remember Subtitle Preferences

Enable this option to allow the player to remember the last subtitle selected by an end-user. That means if the end-user has selected an English subtitle while watching a video, the next time when he/she will watch the same video again, the subtitle will be automatically changed to English.

• Click on "Player".
• Scroll down to the bottom and select the checkbox "Remember Subtitle Preferences" (see below screenshot).

Customizing Appearance of Subtitle

You can customize how subtitles will appear on the player. For instance, you can change the font style, font color, background color, etc.  By changing the subtitle appearance, you can allow the users to see the subtitles clearly.

• To change the appearance of the subtitle, click on "Player" in the CMS.
• Under "Subtitle Options", select the "Font" from the drop-down.
• Select the "Font Size" from the drop-down.
• Type a Hex code for "Font Color" (e.g. #33211D, #D84C2C) You can find Hex Codes Here.
• Type a Hex code for "Background Color".
• Mention an "Opacity" level for the subtitle. (e.g. 10%, 20%, 15%)
• Finally, click on "Save".

When the users will play the video, they will see the change in the subtitle appearance.
